Poisson Distribution Calculator

The Betstamp Poisson Distribution Calculator estimates the probability of countable events — goals, shots, touchdowns, strikeouts, points — based on an expected average rate. Enter the expected average (λ) and your target outcome (k) — the calculator returns the probability of hitting exactly that number, at least that number, or at most that number of events.

How to Use the Poisson Calculator

  1. Enter the Expected Average — the average rate of the event over the interval (e.g., 2.5 goals per game)
  2. Enter the Proposed Events — the specific target count you're modeling (e.g., 3 goals)
  3. The calculator returns three probabilities:
    • Exactly Events: probability of exactly that many events occurring
    • At Least Events: probability of that many or more events
    • At Most Events: probability of that many or fewer events

Example: Expected Average 2.5, Proposed Events 3 →

  • Exactly 3 events: ~21.3%
  • At least 3 events: ~45.6%
  • At most 3 events: ~76.9%

What is the Poisson Distribution?

Poisson distribution is a statistical model that predicts the probability of a given number of independent events occurring in a fixed interval at a constant average rate. It's used across fields from physics to insurance — and it's remarkably accurate for modeling scoring events in sports.

The formula:

P(k) = (λ^k × e^-λ) / k!

Where λ (lambda) is the expected rate and k is the number of events. The calculator handles this instantly.

Using Poisson for Soccer Goals

Soccer goal-scoring is the canonical Poisson example. If Manchester City has an expected goals (xG) of 2.3 against an opponent:

  • Probability of 0 goals: ~10%
  • Probability of 1 goal: ~23%
  • Probability of 2 goals: ~27%
  • Probability of 3+ goals: ~40%

Compare Poisson probabilities to sportsbook prop lines. If a sportsbook offers "Manchester City over 2.5 goals" at +110 (implied probability ~48%), but Poisson says the true probability is 57%, you've identified a +EV bet. Plug both into the [Betstamp EV Calculator] to see the edge in dollars.

Using Poisson for Hockey, Basketball, Baseball, and Football

Poisson works for any low-event, discrete counting stat:

  • NHL: goals, shots on goal, saves, power play goals
  • NBA: 3-pointers made, steals, blocks, turnovers
  • MLB: strikeouts, home runs, hits, runs scored (short samples)
  • NFL: touchdowns, sacks, field goals
  • UFC: significant strikes landed

For high-volume, continuous stats (NBA total points, NFL total yards, NBA 3-point attempts), the Normal distribution typically fits better. Use Poisson when events are rare and independent; use Normal for high-volume, near-continuous stats.

Limitations of Poisson in Sports Betting

Poisson assumes two things that sports partially violate:

  • Independence: in real games, momentum and game script cause correlations
  • Constant rate: average rates change based on opponent strength, venue, pace, and situation

Pros adjust Poisson outputs using:

  • Opponent-adjusted expected rates
  • Pace and possession adjustments
  • Game-script context (garbage time suppresses rates; competitive games boost them)
  • Venue factors (weather, altitude, park factors)

Even with adjustments, Poisson is a quick-and-accurate baseline for prop probabilities. It's the starting point, not the final answer.

How Poisson Fits Into a Sharp Betting Workflow

The full pro workflow for a prop bet:

  1. Estimate the expected rate (λ) using recent performance, opponent strength, and game context
  2. Run the Poisson Calculator to get probabilities for each target
  3. Compare Poisson probabilities to the sportsbook's implied probability for the prop line (use the Betstamp Odds Converter to find implied probability)
  4. If Poisson probability exceeds implied probability, it's a +EV bet — confirm with the Betstamp EV Calculator
  5. Size the bet with the Betstamp Kelly Calculator

Betstamp PRO automates variations of this workflow across every prop market in real time.
